World Allergy Day – Small atomization, big details
July 8, 2024 is the 20th World Allergy Day.As we all know, nebulizers play a very important role in the treatment of allergic diseases.
The World Allergy Organization (WAO) and allergy agencies of various countries jointly launched a global initiative to fight allergic diseases on June 28, 2005, and designated July 8 of each year as World Allergy Day.
Allergic diseases are a large category of diseases caused by abnormal immune responses to allergens. The World Allergy Organization White Paper estimates that the global prevalence of allergic diseases is 10%~40%, including bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergies, drug allergies, as well as many conjunctivitis, angioedema, urticaria, eczema, eosinophilic diseases, insect allergy patients and anaphylactic shock.
How to treat allergic diseases? The goal of treating allergic diseases is to control symptoms and prevent attacks. Treatment methods include: avoiding contact with allergens, drug treatment, etc.
As a common treatment for allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma, nebulizer inhalation therapy is a special nebulizer device that is used to treat the drug and then output it in the form of aerosol, which enters the body with the respiratory airflow. Children’s nebulizer drugs mainly act on the respiratory tract, and have the effects of relieving cough, expectoration, and asthma.
Compared with other conventional oral and intravenous administration methods, nebulizer inhalation therapy has the advantages of fast onset, high local drug concentration, low dosage, convenient application, and few systemic adverse reactions. It can play the role of anti-inflammatory, antitussive, expectorant, reducing respiratory mucosal edema, relieving spasms, and improving ventilation function.
For parents, when the doctor provides a nebulization treatment plan, whether it is in the hospital or at home, accurate medication is still needed to maximize the advantages of nebulization treatment.
Before nebulization treatment:
Avoid excessive eating in children 30 minutes before treatment to avoid nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by crying during nebulization; clean the mouth before inhalation to avoid hindering the penetration of droplets.
Wash your face before inhalation treatment, and do not apply oily creams or ointments to reduce facial drug adsorption.
During nebulization treatment:
(1) Sit or semi-recumbent position should be adopted during nebulization to facilitate the deposition of droplets in the terminal bronchioles.
(2) Evaluate the nebulization dosage. If the drug volume is insufficient, dilute it with a solvent such as saline according to the doctor’s advice.
(3) When inhaling, inhale in an arc shape from mouth to nose, take a deep breath in between calm breathing, and pause as much as possible at the end of inhalation to allow the mist particles to be inhaled deeper. In the initial stage of inhalation treatment, some children will find it difficult to grasp the correct breathing rhythm, and it is easy to cause dizziness or nausea due to rapid breathing (hyperventilation). In this case, you can remove the nebulizer and breathe easily through your nose for a few times, and then continue the treatment after the discomfort disappears. This method is also suitable for children who suddenly want to cough during the inhalation process.
(4) Inhalation is more effective when infants and young children are quiet than when they are crying. For infants and young children who cry a lot, the treatment can be suspended and the nebulization treatment can be continued after they are quiet or soothed to sleep.
(5) During the nebulization process, closely observe the changes in the condition and avoid spraying the drug solution into the eyes, otherwise it is easy to cause increased intraocular pressure and eye discomfort. If chest tightness, wheezing, irritability, rapid breathing and heartbeat, cyanosis, and difficulty breathing occur, the nebulization treatment should be suspended.
After nebulization treatment:
(1) After the nebulization is completed, you should pay attention to washing your face and rinsing your mouth to reduce the deposition of drugs on the face, mouth and pharynx to prevent Candida infection; infants can use cotton swabs dipped in clean water or feed clean water to clean their mouths.
(2) After the nebulization is completed, give a pat on the back in time, and cough and expectorate consciously to facilitate the discharge of sputum, clear the airway, and improve the efficacy.
(3) The tube, sprayer and mask (or mouthpiece) set should be used by one person only to avoid cross contamination. Clean and store them dry after each use to prevent contamination and affect treatment; replace them regularly according to product requirements.
Note: Many nebulized drugs are prescription drugs. You need to choose the appropriate drug under the guidance of a doctor and follow the doctor’s instructions to implement the treatment plan.
